Language policy in Morocco is a mechanism wherebythe state has tried to manage social and politicalconflict. The current language policy thatrecognizes Berber and calls for its mandatoryinclusion in the Moroccan system of education is thelatest apparatus adopted by the state in dealing withthe Berber question in Morocco. Far from its beingsimply a linguistic problem, the Berber question isabove all a political movement that usesethno-linguistic pleas as a platform for demandingjustice and equal opportunities for its marginalizedpeople. Several activists and observers havequestioned the sincerity of this venture, others havegone as far as to suggest that this language policyis nothing but a political weapon used by the stateto counter the rise of Islamism in Morocco. Thequestion is whether the Moroccan state will indeedsucceed in implementing this new language policyafter decades of pursing a language policy ofArabization that shortchanged the Moroccan poor whoneeded higher French proficiency to be able to beable to compete in the job market and contributed tothe marginalization of Berber.

This article is about the demographic features of the population of Morocco, including population density, ethnicity, education level, health of the populace, economic status, religious affiliations and other aspects of the population. Most Moroccans are Sunni Muslims of Berber or mixed Arab-Berber stock. Morocco was inhabited by Berbers since at least 5000 years ago. The Arabs conquered the territory that would become Morocco in the 7th and 11th centuries, at the time under the rule of various late Byzantine Roman princips and indigenous Berber and Romano-Berber principalities, laying the foundation for the emergence of an Arab-Berber culture. A portion of the population is identified as Haratin and Gnaoua, black or highly mixed race Moroccans. Morocco's Jewish minority has decreased significantly and numbers about 7,000. Most of the 100,000 foreign residents are French or Spanish, largely colonists' descendants who are mostly professionals working for European multinationals.

Literature of Morocco

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Moroccan literature is a literature written in (Moroccan) Arabic, Berber or French, and of course particularly by people of Morocco, but also of Al-Andalus. Moroccan literature saw its first flowering in the period of the Almoravid dynasty (1040-1147). In this period two writers stand out: Ayyad ben Moussa and Ibn Bajja and, in al-Andalus, Al-Tutili, Ibn Baqi, Ibn Khafaja and Ibn Sahl. An impression of a number of great poets of the period is given in anthologies and biographies like Kharidat al Qsar, Al Mutrib and Mujam as-Sifr. From 1086 Morocco and Al-Andalus, with its rich tradition from the Umayyads, formed one state and the Almoravid sultans stimulated culture in their courts and in the country.
